BE THE CHANGE

WEEKLY ACTION FOR A HEALTHY ECOSYSTEM

Welcome to a new feature of the Media Committee, BE THE CHANGE by DOV. Each week’s update will include ideas and reminders on how we can bring forth the positives change we are looking for. These articles will show how our intentions, our willingness to heal our emotions, and to create new patterns of thought and action are the keys to bringing about the changes we are preparing for. It will focus on how things are connected, and empower us to take steps that will ultimately guide us forward in our visions and dreams; for ourselves and the large ecosystem upon our wonderful planet.

We understand that with the exponential increase in population in the last century, humans have changed the dynamics of the planet, through city and road development, extensive agricultural practices, pollution, etc.  While the modern lifestyle has brought what appears as a higher quality of life to much of the Western World, at the same in America alone, there are over 1,500  species that are threatened or endangered with extinction.

The change we want is that number to decrease, and to see a recovery.

To be the change we can help some of these species ourselves.

For example, the Monarch Butterfly.

The Associated Press reports in January of the year: The number of Monarch butterflies wintering in Mexico plunged this year to its lowest level since studies began in 1993, leading experts to announce Wednesday that the insects’ annual migration from the United States and Canada is in danger of disappearing. A report released by the World Wildlife Fund, Mexico’s Environment Department and the Natural Protected Areas Commission blames the displacement of the milkweed the species feeds on by genetically modified crops and urban sprawl in the United States, as well as the dramatic reduction of the butterflies’ habitat in Mexico due to illegal logging of the trees they depend on for shelter.
The Monarch Migration is one of great features of the planet, in actuality the butterflies migrate over generations, by use of an inner compass, they find their way across thousands of miles, leaving the icy north for warmth in California and Mexico. It is a display of wonder and instinct that calls for an immediate solution.
The first step is awareness of the situation
The second is for those of us who can, to plant and maintain milkweed plants, in hopes of a Monarch finding it way to nest and lay it’s eggs.
Beyond that other steps include working with organizations to eliminate harmful GMO’s, cutting back on pesticides, protecting our forests, and increasing education on this and other important topics.
We can Be the Change we want to see in the world.
