In a rambling hour-long speech, the US president rejected a Palestinian state and refrained from criticising Israel for its destruction of Gaza.
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday railed against countries recognising Palestine, accusing them of “giving in to Hamas’s ransom demands” and once again rejecting Palestinian statehood in a rambling address to the UN General Assembly.
In an hour-long speech laced with grievances against the UN and contradictions on Gaza, Trump called for “immediate peace negotiations” while squarely blaming Hamas for the lack of a deal, claiming the group had rejected several “reasonable offers”.
He made no acknowledgement of Israel’s relentless bombardment, siege, and mass killings in Gaza, which the UN had described as “monstrous”.
Ten European countries formally recognised Palestine in the run-up to the UN summit, sparking Israeli fury and a rebuke from Washington. Israel, emboldened by Trump’s rhetoric, has threatened retaliatory measures and hinted at annexing swathes of the occupied West Bank.
“As if to encourage continued conflict, some of this body is seeking to unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state. The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists. This would be a reward for these horrible atrocities,” Trump told world leaders gathered in New York on Tuesday.
“Instead of giving in to Hamas’s ransom demands, those who want peace should be united with one message: release the hostages now,” he said.
Later this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to ask Trump for a green light to seize Palestinian territory, despite warnings from Arab and European governments not to proceed with annexation.
Trump will also meet Arab and Muslim leaders on Tuesday to push his plan for Gaza, which would include Israel’s military withdrawal and the sidelining of Hamas in favour of the Palestinian Authority.
“We immediately have to negotiate peace, we have to get the hostages back,” Trump said at the general assembly.
By contrast, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres opened the assembly by calling Israel’s actions in Gaza “monstrous” and accusing it of systematically destroying the territory.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking immediately after Trump, urged nations to recognise Palestine and end the “genocide in Gaza”.
