President Donald Trump has signed a directive ordering the Pentagon to launch military operations against Latin American drug cartels officially designated as foreign terrorist organizations by his administration, according to The New York Times.

The order gives the U.S. military legal authority to conduct anti-cartel missions in foreign countries, with plans already being drafted to target specific groups.

Cartels Named as Terrorist Organizations

Under Trump, the U.S. has formally labeled seven Mexican drug cartels and two international gangs as terrorist entities:

  • Cártel de Sinaloa

  • Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG)

  • Cártel del Noreste (CDN)

  • La Nueva Familia Michoacana (LNFM)

  • Cártel de Golfo (CDG)

  • Cárteles Unidos (CU)

  • Tren de Aragua (TdA) – Venezuela

  • Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) – U.S. origins, Central American operations

  • Cartel de los Soles – Venezuela, run by Nicolás Maduro and top officials

On Thursday, the administration doubled the bounty on Maduro to $50 million, citing his direct links to the Cartel de los Soles, Sinaloa, and TdA.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said:

“Maduro uses foreign terrorist organizations… to bring deadly drugs and violence into our country. The DEA has seized 30 tons of cocaine linked to Maduro and his associates, with nearly seven tons tied to Maduro himself.”

Trump’s War on the Cartels

Trump has long vowed to “wage war” on the criminal organizations flooding America with fentanyl, cocaine, and meth, killing tens of thousands each year.

In May, he revealed he offered Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum a deal to send U.S. troops into Mexico to fight the cartels:

“They are horrible people… If Mexico wanted help with the cartels, we would be honored to go in and do it.”

Sheinbaum rejected the offer, saying:

“Sovereignty is not for sale. Sovereignty is loved and defended.”

What Comes Next

Trump’s new directive is one of the most significant national security moves of his second term, signaling that military force — not just law enforcement — will now be used against cartels operating beyond America’s borders.
