Hungary’s incoming leader halts ICC withdrawal, warning Netanyahu could face arrest amid mounting legal scrutiny over Gaza war crimes.
Key Developments
- Hungary’s incoming prime minister Peter Magyar, says he will stop the country’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court.
- Magyar states that individuals wanted by the ICC, including Benjamin Netanyahu, could be arrested if they enter Hungary.
- Outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban had moved to exit the ICC in opposition to the warrant targeting Netanyahu.
Hungary Reverses Course
Hungary’s incoming prime minister, Peter Magyar, has announced that his government will halt the country’s planned withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), restoring Hungary’s obligations under international law.
Speaking at a news conference in Budapest, Magyar said his team had reviewed the withdrawal process and would stop it before it takes effect.
The move reverses a policy advanced by outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who had sought to withdraw Hungary from the ICC following the court’s warrant targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The withdrawal, scheduled for June 2, would have made Hungary the only European Union country outside the court’s jurisdiction.
Arrest Warning for Netanyahu
Magyar made clear that ICC membership entails binding legal obligations, including enforcing arrest warrants.
“If the country is a member of the International Criminal Court, and a person who is wanted by the court enters our territory, then that person must be taken into custody,” he said.
He added that this position had been communicated directly to Netanyahu, who has been wanted by the court since 2024.
The statement marks a rare explicit commitment by a European leader to enforce the ICC warrant.
Break from Orban’s Alignment
Netanyahu has long relied on strong political backing from Orban, one of his closest allies within the European Union and a vocal critic of the ICC.
Orban’s attempt to withdraw Hungary from the court was widely interpreted as a direct challenge to international accountability mechanisms.
Magyar, leader of the Tisza party, is set to end Orban’s 16-year rule following a decisive electoral victory, signaling a shift in Hungary’s international positioning.
ICC and Gaza Genocide
The ICC warrant against Netanyahu is linked to war crimes committed during the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza, launched in October 2023.
According to the latest figures from Palestinian medical sources reported by WAFA, at least 72,336 Palestinians have been killed and 172,213 wounded in Gaza as of mid-April 2026.
Medical authorities stress that thousands remain trapped under rubble, meaning the actual toll is likely higher.
Independent and UN-linked analyses indicate that a large majority of those killed are civilians, including women and children, with some estimates placing civilian deaths at around 70–80 percent of the total.
Studies and reports have also suggested that the official death toll may significantly undercount the true scale of fatalities, including indirect deaths caused by starvation, disease, and the collapse of healthcare infrastructure.
The war has devastated Gaza’s civilian infrastructure, flattening entire neighborhoods, crippling hospitals, and displacing the vast majority of the population, while humanitarian agencies continue to warn of catastrophic living conditions.
