Baby Formula Shortage – Disaster or Blessing In Disguise?
There has been a lot of hype about it being difficult to find baby formula on grocer’s shelves. But there may be a reason for this. A recall.
What many young parents may not be aware of is the level of toxins in these formulas. Some ingredients can cause a fatal intestinal problem with infants and many of you know that some babies are fussy with certain formulas making it necessary to try out multiple brands until you find one your bundle of joy, well, enjoys. But not just enjoys, but can thrive on. If your infant is fussy, pay attention.
These are some symptoms that may point to a problem with your baby formula:
- Abdominal pain and swelling
- Diarrhea with bloody stool
- Green or yellow vomit
- Changes in heart rate and blood pressure
- Changes in body temperature and breathing
- Refusing to eat
- Lack of weight gain
Why is this occurring? This list of toxins found in some formula should make you realize the need to look at the label when shopping or ordering online.

Other countries have been banning foods with toxic ingredients and fighting against practices such as water fluoridation while the US corporations are not so health centric, but focused more on the bottom line, in dollars and cents (even when it makes no sense!)

Back in March of 2022, the Associated Press posted an article about the lack of sanitary conditions and procedures at the Michigan manufacturing plant recently linked to a cluster of infant illnesses, according to findings released Tuesday by federal safety inspectors.
Yet the FDA is the governing agency that allows toxic addatives in these formulas!
Per Martin/Baughman, Popular Baby Formulas are Linked to Deadly Intestinal Disease
Premature and low birth weight newborns often have trouble nursing or need extra nutrition. Baby foods like Similac and Enfamil are high-calorie, cow’s milk-based products that supply this supplemental nutrition, but do not warn parents of the increased risk that their infant may develop necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a serious gastrointestinal disorder. If not caught and treated immediately, NEC can be fatal.
NEC causes intestinal tissue to die. NEC can also cause holes in the intestine, which allows bacteria from the intestine to leak into an infant’s abdomen. NEC may also lead to the following serious health problems:
- Abdominal infection called peritonitis
- Intestinal stricture, or narrowing of the intestines
- Short bowel syndrome, which makes it hard for the body to absorb fluids and nutrients
Even in cases where NEC is identified early and treated, the child may continue to suffer complication throughout its life.
Which baby formulas are involved?
- Similac Special Care, made by Abbott Laboratories
- Enfamil Human Milk Fortifier, made by Mead Johnson & Company
- Enfamil NeuroPro EnfaCare Infant Formula, made by Mead Johnson & Company
How did mothers feed babies before the introduction of formula?
The obvious answer is breastfeeding. However, in todays fast paced living where two incomes are often required to support the basic needs of house, cars, utilities and such, most women switch to fomulas to get back to work sooner. Sadly, some women are unable to produce enough breast milk. In days gone by we could hire a wet nurse to take over that duty. It was once a highly organized and well-paid profession but wet nurses all but disappeared by 1900.
I found this on Facebook and the fact checkers are busy trying to debunk it.
There are safe alternatives. According to myorganiccompany.com, the number 1 cleanest formula is Kendamil Stage 1. For children who may not be able to ingest whole milk from cows, there is a formula derived from goat milk.

So, while the shortage of formula may have been a frightening news event, the actual reason for the shortages may have been to raise awareness and pull toxic products off the shelves!
You only need to supply a milk type formula for the first 6 to 12 months of your baby’s life to prepare your baby’s intestinal track for real food. After that, You can always make your own foods in a blender mixed with pure water and any combination of fruit, veg, meat and poultry (but without the seasoning for adult palates).
It’s time we broke away from corporate industrialized food sources and pharmaceuticals which we now realize have been causing health problems from childhood to adulthood. Trading natural healthy foods for convenience is not the answer.
It’s time we got back to the garden.
