Since Ancient times the full moon has been recognized as a powerful force for clearing out old energies and harnessing fresh life energy. That’s why it is the perfect time to recharge and cleanse your crystals.

In this article, we look at the significance of a full moon ritual and how you can charge your crystals with moonlight and moon water.

Why do you have to cleanse your crystals?

It is essential to regularly cleanse and recharge your precious stones to restore them to their natural state.

Crystals have naturally occurring energies which are helpful in all kinds of healing practices, including chakra practices but they can diminish with use. For example if you use a crystal to heal someone or to work on healing a particular chakra, then the crystal may redirect or absorb some of the bad energy you are trying to release. This can reduce the healing power of the crystal.

Therefore it’s important to cleanse your crystals properly to ensure their effectiveness so you can continue to harness their healing powers long term.

How does the energy of the moon affect us?

The lunar cycle has a huge impact on human beings and the world around us. It affects the tide, the growth of plants and trees, as well as the behavior and emotional states of animals and humans.

The moon symbolizes feminine energy. It reflects the light of the sun, moderates it, and gives rise to new life. For example lunar energy is known to provide life to young plants. It is also widely believed that the moon affects humans’ health (physical as well as mental), and well-being.

How to charge your crystals in the moonlight

Crystals have healing power, so it is crucial to charge them often to restore their positive healing energy.

One of the best methods to replenish their powers is bathing them in direct moonlight during a full moon phase when the moon is at its fullest energy and brightness.

You can put your crystal under direct moonlight near your window, on a balcony or in your garden. Just make sure that there are no obstacles between the moonlight and the crystal. Leave your crystal out all night and then the next morning your crystal will be restored and ready to use again in spiritual practices.

Moon water can also be extremely powerful for all sorts of healing practices, including crystal healing.

Simply fill a bowl or glass container like a mason jar or glass jar with water and then put it in clear view of the lunar light. Leave it overnight and then the next day the moon water will be ready to use however you choose – you can use it to cleanse your body or home, or create a sacred space during spells and rituals. You can even spritz your plants in it so they can benefit from the healing energies.

You can add your crystals to the water to soak overnight or you can use the moon water the next day to cleanse the crystals.

Other ways to charge your crystals

If you would like to cleanse your crystals but it is not the right lunar phase, don’t panic. There are lots of different methods for charging your crystals. Just be careful to check that the method you choose is suitable for your crystal – for example not all crystals react well to water or salt water.

:: Running water

Wash your crystal under free-flowing water thoroughly for a minute, scrubbing the crystal gently with your fingertips. Negative energies will naturally dispel with the running water and it will also help to wash off any dirt or dust.

:: Salt water

Salt is known to absorb unwanted energy and expel negativity. Dip your crystal in a bowl of salt water for a few hours and then rinse and pat dry.

:: Brown rice

You can also bury your crystals in a bowl full of dry, uncooked brown rice for about 24 hours. Rice is known for its ability to absorb negative energies and is said to work particularly well with Black Tourmaline. Be careful to dispose of the rice immediately after use in order to get rid of the bad energy.

:: Natural light

You can recharge your crystal in natural bright light as well as moon light. Put your crystal outside, or on a window sill before nightfall and bring it back inside the next day before midday. This will expose your crystal to both sunlight as well as moonlight which can help charge the Crystal with powerful energies.

:: Smudging with sage

Sage is a sacred plant known for its healing properties, which is why it is often used in smudging. Smudging involves lighting a loose bundle of sage leaves which will give off a perfumed smoke. Place the precious stone near the smoke and allow it to cover it thoroughly for around 30 minutes.

The smoke will help to expel inharmonious energies from your crystal and recharge it to its fullest positive energies.

:: Sound

Sound healing is yet another way to recharge your stone. It is entirely up to you what kind of instrument you use – you can use the sound of a bell, tuning fork, singing bowl or sound bowl.

You simply need to make sure that the sound vibrates around your stone thoroughly for about 5 to 10 minutes.

:: Using your breath

Using your breath is another way to heal your crystals. Simply inhale deeply and keep your stone in your dominant hand. Then exhale a short and forceful breath over your crystal to make it vibrate to its fullest. Do this for at least 30 seconds.

:: Visualization

Visualization is another method of recharging precious stones. Concentrate for a minute and then keep your stone in your hand as you visualize the bright light and positive energy surrounding your stone.

Feel the natural rhythm of these energies and watch as they get brighter as the negative energy and impurities seep away. Continue this for a few minutes until you feel a shift in the energy of your stone.

How often should you cleanse your crystals?

There is no strict rule as to how often you should cleanse your crystals, but once a month is usually a good benchmark to aim for. Generally speaking, the more you use your stone, the more frequently you should cleanse it.

So if you are using your crystals every day then you may want to cleanse your crystals on a weekly basis rather than monthly.

Rituals to perform on a full moon

Charging your crystals isn’t the only thing you can do on a full moon, in fact, there are a number of moon rituals you can perform on a full moon that will be highly beneficial for your mental and spiritual health.

Cleanse your home (smudging)

The full moon has magical healing and reenergizing powers. On this day the moon is closest to the earth and at its brightest. This can be a great time to combine moon energies with smudging to cleanse your home.

For this, simply light a bundle of sage leaves and then waft the smoke throughout your home, including your cupboards and wardrobes, to cleanse every corner of your home.

Full moon meditation

A full moon brings our emotions to the surface. That’s why incorporating meditation into a full moon ceremony can be particularly effective.

Find a comfortable position in clear view of the full moon. Take a deep breath and clear your mind. Once your mind is calm, begin to concentrate on the beneficial lunar energy which is filling your being. Let your thoughts flow on their own and simply return to the breath if your mind becomes too busy.

Full moon bath

If you have a bath from which you can see the moon then you can benefit from the powerful full moon energies while having a relaxing soak. If you have an outdoor bath or pool then that’s even better, as you can directly connect with nature while enjoying the healing powers of the full moon.

Takeaway

Nature is a powerful healer, and the moon is a particularly special source of energy in our lives. Moonlight has excellent healing, rejuvenating, and energizing properties which are invaluable when it comes to recharging and cleansing your crystals.

But it’s not just valuable for charging crystals. The full moon can power all kinds of moon rituals and spiritual healing practices so make sure you use it to the fullest to heal both your body and mind.
