This solar eclipse encourages self-sufficiency and authentic expression

A full moon brings intensity and drama to everyday moments, from being pushed to have a relationship-defining conversation to addressing heavy-duty emotions rooted in the past. On the other hand, new moons give us the opportunity to set a powerful intention or plant seeds that we want to see grow over the course of a new lunar cycle. In both cases, we are generally invited to work with the current astrological energy.

But eclipse seasons, which occur twice a year and include roughly four lunar events, are a completely different story. These supercharged new and full moons are known to cause stunning shifts and significant course changes that can promote growth. The first eclipse season in 2023 begins on Thursday, April 20, at 12:12 a.m. ET, with a solar eclipse and new moon in Aries, the cardinal fire sign represented by the ram.

This is the first eclipse of the year and the first in a brand-new series that will last until March 29, 2025. Continue reading to learn about solar eclipses and which signs will be most affected by this astrological event.

What Do Solar Eclipses Mean in Astrology?

There are numerous ways to make the most of a new moon, from taking a favorite spiritual bath to simply talking about your goals with a friend or therapist. However, unlike new moons, which occur once or twice a month, solar eclipses, which occur when the moon casts a shadow on the sun, occur about twice a year and can be thought of as more intense new moons.

Because eclipse energy is so potent, it is best to immerse yourself in a complex ritual to avoid actively working with it. Consider it an astrological torrential downpour or a windstorm. The best way to deal with severe weather is to be informed and to take a hands-off approach, allowing storm clouds to sweep in and do their thing — even if it means shaking up your life in ways you weren’t expecting. When the dust settles, you might be able to identify a big-picture explanation for the chaos.

In fact, solar eclipses are strongly associated with self-discovery. After all, in astrology, the sun governs core identity and self-image, whereas the moon governs emotions and intuition. As a result, when the moon casts its shadow on the sun, you may be compelled to reconsider how you see yourself. As a result, you may discover that it is time to take a different path.

However, it is important to note that not every solar eclipse will have a profound, life-changing impact on you. Everything is determined by how the event interacts with your birth chart. When an eclipse hits — or is in aspect to — a major placement, you’ll feel it the most. In other words, consider your big three — the sun, moon, and rising signs — as well as other planetary placements and angles in your chart (such as Mercury, Venus, and Mars signs) to see how the solar eclipse may affect you.
