Ariel Bernstein is a former Israeli Defense Foce (IDF) combat soldier who fought in Gaza in 2014. Now he campaigns for peace and against Israel’s occupation of Gaza. Mr. Bernstein explained that it is propaganda that Palestinians want to kill Jews. He described fighting in Gaza and said that the IDF would inform a targeted neighborhood that it wanted to fight and that the people should leave the area. If residents stayed then they were treated as if they were actively participating in Hamas or as collaborators. Once the population was warned, the area became a battleground, and would cease being a neighborhood. A higher level of fire power could be used. Dehumanization was used against Palestinians to stop IDF soldiers from questioning the attacks. He said that due to dehumanization, most Israelis have the attitude that there is no space for both Palestinians and Jews. War becomes the only option.
