If everything is one, why is there so much darkness? The Law of Polarity offers an answer — and a way to tell light from its imitation.

There is a question that sits beneath almost every conversation about spirituality, and many people never fully put it down. If there is a loving source behind all things, why does God allow evil?

It is asked by people who have lost a child, by people who have watched a war on the news, by people who have simply lived long enough to see cruelty win more often than it should. It is one of the most honest questions a human being can ask. And it is the question the Law of Polarity was made to address.

This article takes it on directly. Then it turns to the practical problem that matters most for this arc: if both light and dark are real, and both can show up speaking the same language, how do we tell them apart when contact comes?

The Oldest Question

[Documented] Philosophers have a name for this problem: theodicy, a word coined by Gottfried Leibniz in 1710 to mean the justification of God in the face of evil. The puzzle is far older. A famous version, traditionally credited to the Greek philosopher Epicurus and restated by David Hume in the 1700s, runs roughly like this: if God wants to prevent evil but cannot, God is not all-powerful. If God can but will not, God is not all-good. If God both can and wants to, where does evil come from?

The traditions have offered many answers. Two matter most here.

The first is free will. A world where beings can truly choose good must also be a world where they can truly choose harm. Remove the possibility of evil, and you remove the possibility of genuine love, which has to be chosen to mean anything.

The second is sometimes called the soul-making answer. [Documented] The philosopher John Hick developed it in Evil and the God of Love (1966), building on the early Christian thinker Irenaeus. He borrowed a phrase from the poet John Keats, who in an 1819 letter called the world “the vale of Soul-making.” The idea is that this world was never meant to be a paradise. It was meant to be a place where souls grow — and growth requires difficulty.

[Assessed] That is very close to what this tradition has been saying all along. Earth is a school.

A School Needs Contrast

If we are in school, we need contrast to learn. You cannot understand light without having seen dark. You cannot choose kindness in any meaningful way if cruelty was never an option. You cannot learn courage where there is nothing to fear.

[Oral Tradition] That is the purpose of polarity in this tradition. Third density is the density of choice, and choice requires two real options. The darkness in this world is not proof that the source has abandoned us. It is the other half of the contrast that makes learning possible.

And the school is built with mercy. Article 5 described Earth as a forgiving classroom, and the same features matter here. There are the three chances at the big lessons. There is forgiveness, which lets a person release what they have done and begin again. And there is reincarnation, which in this tradition means that no single life, however hard, is the final word.

[Oral Tradition] All of this rests on one premise that nearly every spiritual tradition shares: the soul is immortal. If that is true, the physical realm is not the whole of our existence. It is one chapter — a short and intense one — in which there is a great deal to learn. The pain here is real. But it is not the end of the story, and it is not without purpose.

Two Paths, One Whole

Article 2 used the yin-yang symbol to show that light and dark are two movements of one circle, each carrying a seed of the other. The Law of Polarity is that image put into motion.

[Oral Tradition] The Law of One teaches that even the darkness is part of the whole. Service-to-self is not outside creation. It is one of the two paths a soul can walk through third density, and both are ultimately ways the one Creator comes to know itself. That does not make the two paths equal in their effects on others. It means that evil, in this view, is not a rival god. It is a choice made within the one.

[Oral Tradition] In the Ra material, the turning point between the two paths is the heart. Ra describes a series of energy centers in the body, and the heart center — the green ray — is the gateway to fourth density, the density of love. A being who opens the heart begins to see others as part of themselves, and service-to-others becomes natural rather than forced. A being who keeps the heart closed can still grow powerful, but only by bending everything around it toward itself.

[Assessed] This is why heart-centeredness is not a soft idea in this tradition. It is the hinge on which the whole graduation turns. The central lesson of this school is learning to serve others — and that lesson is learned in the heart, not the head.

Same Force, Different Ends

Article 3 noted that the Jedi and the Sith draw on the same Force. The difference between them is not the energy. It is the end it serves. Star Wars tells the story of a soul sliding from one pole to the other, and it is worth looking at closely.

[Documented] In Revenge of the Sith (2005), Anakin Skywalker is a gifted Jedi haunted by visions of his wife, Padmé, dying in childbirth. He has already lost his mother and could not save her. Chancellor Palpatine, secretly a Sith Lord, tells him a story about Darth Plagueis, a Sith said to have learned how to keep the ones he loved from dying. The implication is clear: the dark side can give Anakin what the Jedi cannot. Anakin turns. And in the cruelest twist of the saga, his choices bring about the very loss he feared. Padmé dies anyway.

[Assessed] Every law in this arc shows up in that story. Fear lowered Anakin’s frequency. A being working the edges of the law made him an offer, with the price left vague. He consented. Cause and effect delivered exactly what he was trying to avoid. And crucially, he did not fall because he loved evil. He fell because he was afraid, and someone offered him a way out of the fear.

That is how polarity usually works in real life. Very few people choose darkness for its own sake. They choose it because it promises to protect them from pain.

Telling Light From Its Imitation

Here is the practical problem polarity creates for anyone thinking about contact. Because both paths come from the same source, they can speak the same language. Service-to-self beings can talk about light, ascension, love, hidden knowledge, and humanity’s great destiny just as fluently as service-to-others beings can. Palpatine sounded like a friend.

[Assessed] So the vocabulary is not the test. The test is the end being served. The Contact Counter-Current arc used one simple question as its litmus test, and it applies here: does this contact leave people more sovereign, or more managed?

A few signs follow from that question:

  • Freedom or dependence. Service-to-others contact tends to point people back to their own power and their own discernment. Service-to-self contact tends to make them need the source of the message.
  • Open or secret. Light generally welcomes questions. Control generally demands trust without them.
  • Love or fear. A message that leaves you calmer, kinder, and more connected is pointing one way. A message that leaves you afraid, special, or separated from others is pointing the other.
    • Flattery or equality. Be wary of any message that tells you that you are one of a chosen few — specially selected, uniquely awakened, part of an elite who alone understands. It feels good, which is exactly why it works. It quietly sets you above everyone else, separates you from the people around you, and ties you to the messenger. Light tends to tell you that everyone can do what you can.
  • Clear or vague terms. As Article 4 described, any offer with hidden fine print deserves a second look, however bright the packaging.

None of these is a perfect rule. But together, they give a person somewhere to stand.

Cramming for the Final Exam

If this world is a school, many people would say the coursework has gotten much harder lately.

[Oral Tradition] In this tradition, that is not an accident. The lessons of service to others are sometimes put upon us quite deliberately — through loss, illness, conflict, or circumstances that force us to choose between closing the heart and opening it. It can feel like nothing but struggle. And given the window we are in, those lessons are said to be coming hard and heavy, like a student cramming for a final exam.

Article 2 described why. Humanity is said to be at the end of a long cycle, close to the shift from third density to fourth. Before a graduation, everything unfinished comes due. The remnants of the old — old wounds, old patterns, old fears, old structures of control — have to be squeezed out before the new can fully take hold.

[Assessed] That framing will not make anyone’s hardship easier to bear in the moment. But it can change how it is held. A trial that seems random can feel like abandonment. A trial understood as part of the coursework can be met with a question instead of despair: what is this here to teach me, and how can I meet it with an open heart?

The Night Shift

Some of that clearing work is said to happen while we sleep.

[Oral Tradition] Many in this community say that dreams right now are unusually active, and that they are bringing up unresolved feelings and lessons from our past — old relationships, old regrets, people and places we have not thought about in years. The teaching is that these dreams are not random. They are a way of resolving the past in the dream state, so that we do not have to carry it forward into the new.

[Documented] Sleep science offers an intriguing parallel. In a 2009 paper, researchers Matthew Walker and Els van der Helm proposed what they called an “overnight therapy” role for REM sleep: during dreaming, the brain appears to revisit emotional memories while stress chemistry is low, which may help soften their emotional charge. Science does not claim this is spiritual work. But it does suggest that dreaming is one of the ways we process what we have not yet resolved.

I would like to hear from you. Have your dreams changed lately? Are old people, places, or feelings showing up that you thought were long behind you? Have any of those dreams left you feeling lighter when you woke? Share your experiences in the comments. Naradigm Shift has always been a conversation, and this is one where readers may know more than any single writer.

Why the Dark Is Allowed

So why does God allow evil? This tradition’s answer is not that evil does not matter, or that suffering is deserved. It is that a world of real choice needs real contrast, and that souls who are immortal can afford to learn in a place where the lessons are hard. The darkness is allowed because the light has to be chosen.

For the question at the heart of this arc, polarity gives us one more layer of protection. When contact comes, we will not be able to judge beings by their power, their appearance, or even their words. We will have to judge them by where they are pointing us: toward sovereignty or toward management, toward love or toward fear. A person who has learned to read that difference in daily life will be ready to read it anywhere.

The exam is close. The lessons are coming hard. But a student who knows why the coursework exists can meet it with an open heart — and that, in this tradition, is the whole point of the school.

Whatever the question, love is the answer. You have to believe it to see it
