This recipe was sent to me by a reader after her daughter had pneumonia. She said this is potent and worked very well, so I’m passing it forward!
Since I had allergic reactions to penicillin in my 20s (the last one put me in the hospital), I’m interested in natural whole foods that act like antibiotics (with no side-effects and which confer even greater benefits) to the person who is sick. Prescription penicillin one gets from the doctor is derived from mold. I have often wondered if my present day mold sensitivity is secondary to the allergies to penicillin made from mold.
I found that this mixture of medicinal foods (that are extremely high in Vitamin C) speeds up recovery time, and all the ingredients are found in your kitchen.
The goal is to keep you out of the hospital, but, of course, consult your doctor when appropriate.
Orange – rich in vitamin C, A and also potassium, calcium and phosphorus. Known to decrease excess mucus from the head, sinuses, and nasal passages. Loaded with the flavonoid, hesperidin, found in citrus also including lemons and grapefruits. Hesperidin helps lower high blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure exacerbates pneumonia, bronchitis, and also asthma.
Lemon – very alkalinizing to the body, and that right there may be their greatest asset. It is known that disease doesn’t thrive in alkaline blood. They contain huge amounts of vitamin B, C, calcium, iron, potassium, and phosphorus. Lemons are a natural antiseptic, helpful in destroying harmful bacteria in infection. Because of their high vitamin C content, lemons are a powerful, quick immune system builder and essential for healing wounds. They’re especially beneficial to the liver, and help it detoxify the body.
Grapefruit – aids the body in eliminating poisons. Grapefruit is again high in vitamin C and A. Ruby Red grapefruit is best, containing beta-carotene, which gives the grapefruit some of its Vitamin A; and lycopene which causes the reddish color and is a strong antioxidant. The bitter rind of the grapefruit (not used in this recipe) is a natural source of quinine.
Garlic – very powerful antimicrobial herb that effectively cleanses the blood of all that is harmful. Unlike conventional antibiotics, the bacteria don’t build up forming super-resistant bugs, rather garlic may be taken over long periods. Allicin is the active compound. Besides being one of the best natural home remedies for clearing clogged arteries and removing cholesterol, it also magically lowers systolic and diastolic blood pressure, lowers oxidative stress, boosts your immunity and strengthens the liver. Garlic has all the goods and you aren’t going anywhere so go ahead! It’s great for dealing with pneumonia, colds, coughs, ear infections, and much more. It has a positive effect on the lymph system, aiding in the elimination of toxic waste matter in the body.
Onion – contains vitamin A, thiamine, iron, niacin, and calcium. Onions have strong antiseptic properties. When ingested raw, they gently and rapidly drain mucus from the sinus cavities and loosen phlegm in the chest and bronchial tubes which in turn allows better oxygenation. Useful in cases of asthma, UTIs, bronchitis, pneumonia, and they inhibit thrombosis (via platelet aggregation). They will also help destroy worms and other parasites in the body.
Peppermint Oil – brings oxygen into the blood stream. Cleanses and strengthens the entire body, relieves nausea, helps clear headaches and the sinuses, and is anti-inflammatory.

For children – take 1 teaspoon periodically throughout the day, the goal is taking a ½ cup.
‘Nature’s Penicillin’ stores in a tightly closed, labeled glass jar in the refrigerator for 5 days. The lemon and garlic are great natural preservatives.
I am sure this can be frozen in ice cube trays, but I don’t know how long it will be good for – perhaps ~3 months to get you through the winter. Place cubes into a freezer bag to reduce freezer burn and degradation of the quality.

When food is properly understood as a gift, it becomes clear that it is a tangible expression of God’s love for us. As theologian Norman Wirzba put it, food is “God’s love made edible.” It is one essential way that he shows his care for us (see Matt. 6:26). It is a physical embodiment of God’s common grace, given for the good of his creation. And it’s one of the practical means by which Jesus Christ sustains all things.
