By Shaun King,

What the KKK did to Black farmers in the Jim Crow South, Israeli settlers now do to Palestinian families—under the protection of soldiers.

Content note:Ā what follows includes graphic violence against animals—documented proof of a crime that must be seen to be believed.

On theĀ outskirts of as-Samu, in theĀ South Hebron HillsĀ of the occupied West Bank, a Palestinian family watched their home become a battlefield. Not a battlefield between armies. A battlefield betweenĀ masked settlersĀ and a family ofĀ farmersĀ who keep sheep and raise children.

OnĀ November 2nd, Israeli media published security-camera footage from theĀ DraminĀ family’s yard:Ā nine masked menĀ carryingĀ clubsĀ fan out through the gate. TheyĀ shatter windshieldsĀ andĀ torch harvests. Three of them slip into theĀ sheep penĀ and beginĀ beating lambs in front of the ewes—throwing the babies to the floor,Ā hurling concrete blocks, swinging clubs,Ā stompingĀ fragile bodies until the pen is quiet. By one countĀ at least six lambs were killedĀ andĀ fourĀ gravely injured that night; other reports sayĀ ten were killedĀ across attacks on neighboring pens in the same burst of violence. What no one disputes is the intent:Ā terrorize the familyĀ byĀ slaughtering their livelihoodĀ in front of their eyes.

No Hamas on this farm.
No tunnels on this farm.
No hostages on this farm.
No weapons on this farm.

Just humble people and their livestock.

When I read the accounts, the brutality didn’t end at the pen. Inside the house, settlersĀ smashed windowsĀ and theĀ front door, then blastedĀ pepper gasĀ throughout the rooms.Ā Two gas grenadesĀ were tossed inside. AnĀ infant—six months old—was hospitalized, along with other children. The family is home now, but still under treatment. The mother and father are trying to console babies who learned too early that men can come in the night and turn a home into a gas chamber.

Step back from this single night and you will see aĀ patternĀ that Palestinians have begged the world to see:Ā settler violence on a near-daily basis, carried out with overwhelming impunity. Human-rights monitors have documentedĀ hundreds of attacksĀ this year alone, with a reportedĀ 757 incidents in the first half of 2025Ā that caused casualties or property damage—aĀ 13% increaseĀ over the same period last year. Meanwhile,Ā settler outposts have mushroomed: monitors countedĀ 84 new outpostsĀ over the past year, compared withĀ 49Ā the year before—many of themĀ illegalĀ even under Israeli law. Outposts that pop up as a single caravan become theĀ excuseĀ to seize land, push Palestinians off hillsides, and call the theft ā€œfacts on the ground.ā€

Settlers don’t just use theirĀ fistsĀ andĀ clubs. They useĀ ATVs, whichĀ far-right ministersĀ boast ofĀ providingĀ to outposts to extend reach. They useĀ dronesĀ to chase flocks untilĀ ewes miscarry. They scatterĀ poisoned baitĀ to kill farm dogs and wildlife—carcasses laterĀ dumped at village entrancesĀ to send a message:Ā leave. TheyĀ steal flocks,Ā slaughterĀ what they take, and burn what they can’t. And when Palestinian families file complaints, they learn the bitter grammar of occupation: the police willĀ announceĀ an investigation,Ā collect a car, and produceĀ no arrests.

I need you to understand this with a clear moral frame:Ā these settlers are modern-day terrorists. Their objective isĀ notĀ security. Their objective isĀ dominationĀ throughĀ dispossession. They are theĀ night ridersĀ of our time. In the Jim Crow South, theĀ KKKĀ burned Black families’ homes, gutted their barns, torched their fields, andĀ killed livestock—not because a cow was a threat, but because terrorizing a Black farmer was the fastest way toĀ steal landĀ andĀ break a community’s will. I know that history well. I know the stories. And when I watch masked men beat lambs to death in front of weeping ewes, I don’t see ā€œclashes.ā€ I see theĀ same objectiveĀ wearing a different uniform.

International law does not hesitate here. TheĀ West Bank is occupied territory. Under theĀ Fourth Geneva Convention, the occupying power has a legal duty toĀ protect civilians and their property, toĀ prevent and punishĀ crimes committed under its watch, andĀ notĀ to transfer its own civilians into the territory (Article 49(6)).Ā Wilful killing,Ā ill-treatment, andĀ extensive destruction of propertyĀ notĀ justified by military necessity areĀ grave breaches—what the layperson callsĀ war crimes. When soldiersĀ stand byĀ as settlers attack, or arrive only toĀ retrieve a suspect’s car, orĀ escortĀ outpost expansions, that is not ā€œneutral.ā€ That isĀ state responsibilityĀ wearing a uniform.

I know what the apologists will say: ā€œBut there’s a war.ā€ Let me be precise: there wasĀ no battleĀ on this farm. There wereĀ babiesĀ in cribs,Ā childrenĀ in hallways, andĀ lambsĀ in a pen. If you need a security pretext to justify throwingĀ concrete blocksĀ onto a newborn’s body, the problem is yourĀ morality, not my words.

I want to put a few facts in one place no one can spin:

  • Place:Ā as-Samu, South Hebron Hills; the family livesĀ ~500 metersĀ from theĀ illegal settlement of Susya.
  • Attackers:Ā nine masked settlers, armed withĀ clubsĀ andĀ concrete blocks;Ā ATVsĀ have appeared in recent attacks in the region.
  • Farm toll:Ā at least six lambs killedĀ andĀ four gravely injuredĀ (other reporting saysĀ ten killed);Ā hay bales torched,Ā vehicle destroyed.
  • Home toll:Ā windowsĀ andĀ front doorĀ smashed;Ā pepper gasĀ deployed inside;Ā two gas grenadesĀ thrown;Ā children hospitalized, including aĀ six-month-old infant.
  • Police posture:Ā public claims of an investigation; aĀ suspect vehicleĀ recovered byĀ IDF/Border Police/Shin Bet;Ā no arrestsĀ reported to date.
  • Pattern:Ā near-dailyĀ settler attacks;Ā 757 incidentsĀ in the first half ofĀ 2025;Ā 84 new outpostsĀ in a single year.

If you felt your stomach turn reading this, good. If you felt dĆ©jĆ  vu—thinking of Black families whose barns were burned, whose livestock were shot, whose land deeds went up in smoke under the ā€œlawā€ā€”good. We must stop letting officials hide behind the wordĀ securityĀ when theĀ methodĀ is terror and theĀ goalĀ is to make a peopleĀ disappearĀ from their land.

Here is whatĀ shouldĀ happen now:

The family should receiveĀ immediate restitutionĀ for their animals and crops; their complaint should trigger aĀ real criminal probeĀ withĀ named suspects,Ā arrests, andĀ charges; the nearbyĀ illegal outpostĀ should beĀ dismantled; theĀ military commanderĀ for the area should be forced to explain under oath why soldiers didĀ notĀ protect civilians during repeated attacks; and international monitors should treat the systematic targeting ofĀ livestock and livelihoodsĀ as what it is—aĀ tool of forced displacement.

And I will say this plainly to the governments who fund or arm this machine: if yourĀ money, yourĀ equipment, and yourĀ political coverĀ make nights likeĀ this oneĀ possible, you areĀ notĀ bystanders. You are partners.
