Happy?

Rob Stevens, PhD

We are living in a period where nothing is as it seems.  Listening to the media we are assailed with news of war, violence, greed and crime.

I will stop right there as I want to point out the seemingly obvious.  We can choose our mood.

This is a short piece written during an unusually quiet morning. I decided to fire up my HiFi to sit down and just listen to music. In the past I managed to find the time. But these days, it’s not something I do very often.

Well, after only a few short moments the music worked its magic. The rush of emotion and elation really caught me off guard.  Think about that for a moment; what sort of mental state are we in?

A few bars of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” or, Bendith’s “Can Am Gariad” which I believe translates to “Sing about Love”.  You instinctively know it’s about love with no need to understand the language. It’s clear to see how music moves people with Andrea Bocelli and Ellie Goulding singing – Return to Love. The look on their faces tells all. We can be deeply touched by music and transported to happier times.

The clear lesson or reminder here is we can all do something to raise our emotional state despite the constant bombardment, physically and mentally, from those supposedly in charge.  We all need to take a moment to gauge our mood.

I have since revisited an old journal where I had a list of those things in life that make people happy.  It seems to me we should all take a moment to think positively and perhaps plan to be happy.  So, if the World is getting you down consider engaging with one or more of the following:

  • Family and Friends.
  • Gratitude and Forgiveness.
  • Meaningful work, busy not rushed, that plays to your signature strengths. Don’t stay in a job you dislike.
  • Giving to others, sprinkling small favors’ is as uplifting as large donations.
  • Personal freedom, be your authentic self, be creative.
  • Good health, get out in nature to increase your feelings of well-being, and eat well.

Feed your body, mind, and soul with what’s good for you and makes you feel good!

Finally, I’d like to recount a few one-liners that might go some way to helping us view life differently.  The first two I believe I’ve heard in the Kung Fu Panda movie(s). They are nevertheless worth repeating…

There is no secret ingredient”

“Awesomeness comes with no extra charge”

“We can all spur a ripple of positive change”

“Learn to say ‘No’

“Rest is required to achieve growth”

“Unconventional is often better”

Embrace change

“Success is failure after failure with no loss of enthusiasm”

“Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain.”

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style” – Maya Angelou

“Listen to your body and inner scorecard”

“Good parents give their children roots and wings”

“Imagination is the only thing that keeps us going.” – Said the Caterpillar to Alice in Wonderland

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent” – E Roosevelt

“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any”
-Alice Walker

“Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness. ‘Happy’ would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness” -Carl Jung

“There are as many nights as days. One is just as long as the other over the course of a year”  -Carl Jung

“No tree, it is said, can grow to Heaven unless its roots reach down to Hell”  -Carl Jung

“People will do anything, no matter how absurd, to avoid facing their own souls”
-Carl Jung

“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.”
– Martin Luther King Jr.

“Keep a child’s sense of wonder and excitement”

“Laughter is the best medicine” (Ask any kid!)

“Laughter heals all wounds, and that’s one thing that everybody shares. No matter what you’re going through, it makes you forget about your problems. I think the world should keep laughing.” Kevin Hart

In conclusion I’d like to think that it is compassion that makes us human. Expressing your feelings is a strength not a weakness.  Be the change you want to see in the World, and we will all rise together.
