It’s hard to believe that we are coming to the end of another year, in many ways time seems to have whizzed by, but on another level, it feels slower than geological time. It’s been a gnarly and tempestuous year, with so much happening on so many different levels in life; many of us have felt caught up in the whirlwind of currents, feeling lost in the cacophony of the noise of life. Although it’s hard to articulate, life does seem noisier and somewhat more intrusive than usual, making it hard to find peace and stillness. Yet, through the noise and chaos, there is a sense of strength, vision, and purpose rising up, and reaching deeply into the hearts and souls of us all.
So many seem entrenched in the pedestrian-ness of life, tethered to ‘normal’, trying to keep on keeping on. It’s understandable, given the level of challenge so many face at the current time, yet the drive for ‘normal’ can be divisive, as it doesn’t celebrate uniqueness or creativity; there is no room for individuality. Of course, when we’re just trying to get through each day to pay the bills and feed the family, it’s hard to see where dreams, creativity or individuality could fit, but these qualities are the light within that fuel our sense of purpose and vision, and we need them to find true balance and joy in life.
When we are born, life is a blank canvas waiting to be brought to life by the strokes of the brush, the splashes of colour and the pencil marks of possibility. This canvas is brought to life by our hopes, dreams and creativity, and when we feed this canvas, the landscape before us opens up far more than we could ever truly imagine. Although the canvas is blank, some of us have the courage or freedom to create something unique, but many choose to paint by numbers as it either conforms to normal, or it gives the illusion of a safety net. Whatever path we follow and however we choose to create the canvas of our lives, it seems important to acknowledge our gifts and strengths as we each explore new ways to flourish and thrive.
Perhaps it’s an inherent part of being human to want to ‘fit’ or be ‘normal’, perhaps it’s ‘safety in numbers’ like sheep, or perhaps it simply takes too much courage to step away from normal and stand in our truth and power. The drive to ‘fit’ is strong, as it’s often ingrained into us from birth, yet this feeds fear and self-doubt, pushing us towards that hamster wheel of keeping on keeping on. There is no judgement, just an acknowledgement that it’s time to awaken the slumbering spark within our hearts and souls in order to live with passion and purpose once again. Contemplating how to fill a blank canvas or how to make it bigger, brighter and more unique might be too much for some, but it seems time now for those of us that can, to step beyond our comfort zones and into the unchartered terrain of wholeheartedly loving ourselves and our lives.
Being human is definitely a complex, complicated and confusing existence; there is no instruction booklet or app that can show us the way. Even though we know there is no instruction booklet, it doesn’t stop so many of us trying to find one, as we try to follow the ‘rules’ and get life ‘right’. Although it’s understandable to want to live life well, and to understand why things are the way they are, intuitively we know that there are never any definitive answers, as life changes with the ebb and flow of the tides. When we live consciously, we step beyond the constructs of ‘normal’ and re-connect to the power within to guide us.
Perhaps it’s time to acknowledge that the way to inject new energy, colour and life into the canvas is to let go of the caveats and conditions we place upon our own existence. We need to stop hovering on the edge of life waiting for a better moment to live and we need to stop feeling we need to be more, do more or achieve more in order to be happy. We each need to find our own ways of working out how to live life, and we need to start having the confidence to pick up the paintbrush and let our intuitions lead the way.
It’s so easy to define ourselves by everything we are not. We see the faults and imperfections far more easily than we see the brilliance. Yet, what we are is not the same as what we are not. We are not the sum of what we haven’t achieved, nor are we the sum of our failures; our parts are so much more. We often define ourselves by what we are not, as we feel we need to do more in order to attain peace, joy and happiness. We rarely, if ever, entertain the possibility that we are the way we are because that’s the way we are. Perfection is found in imperfection, wisdom is found in struggle, and happiness can be found in the here and now. If we spend our lives looking for happiness and seeking out joy, we can lose sight of the present moment. Surely, we need to stop chasing happiness as a state of being on the far horizon, and instead learn to live vibrantly in the here and now?
Life may not be as we want it to be; we may have pain, struggle, unhappiness and challenges, but (unless we are extremely lucky), these are always a part of life. We can no more eradicate these than we can stop the day turning into night. Equally, if we believe happiness will come once we have eradicated or fixed all of our problems, then we are denying ourselves the opportunity to be happy, as happiness is not a default setting, nor is it a result of being ‘fixed’. It’s a force to be cultivated and nurtured. Life’s tough, bewildering and sometimes downright mean, but it’s often during such times where we find strength and wisdom as the light within shines brighter than ever before, illuminating the soul, giving us the courage to finally pick up the paintbrush and let our hearts and souls find joy in the freedom of expression.
It’s time to breathe more wholeheartedly into life, to live more consciously than ever before, and to stop the frantic quest to try to make sense of it all. Living wholeheartedly is an art, and living authentically with passion are the brushstrokes of living intuitively. So, the more wholehearted we become, the more we find the freedom to flourish and thrive…
As always, I wish you all kinds of wonderful.
With love,
Sarah-Jane
