In modern life, almost everything we do has become a distraction — our phones, TV, work, socializing, even productivity itself. But what exactly are we distracting ourselves from? In this video, I explore the idea that in the 21st century, we don’t distract ourselves from danger or survival — we distract ourselves from our own thoughts. I ask what distraction would have meant for the first humans, who had food, shelter, and rest but no endless stimulation. What were they escaping from — if anything at all? Every human being has an innate ability to feel completely at peace within their own mind. Yet this inner stillness is often the very thing we avoid. If clarity of mind is what we constantly distract ourselves from, then maybe it’s one of the most important things we can rediscover. While modern life makes a quiet mind more difficult than ever, it isn’t impossible. And that realization may be one of the most beautiful and hopeful truths about being human today.
