In his inaugural speech on January 20, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to regain control of the Panama Canal. President Trump accused Panama of violating neutrality agreements by charging high fees for U.S. ships and criticized the involvement of “Chinese soldiers” in allegedly illegal operations along the canal. He had previously warned that the canal must not fall into the hands of “bad actors,” even suggesting military intervention as a possibility.
