Legend has it that in ancient China a wise General would choose his foot soldiers by their having a certain mark below the knee on both legs. The mark was created by something called moxibustion, a cone or stick of dried mugwort, which when lit and held close to and just above the skin, transferred focussed heat on one particular chosen acupuncture point.
The intention was to stimulate the point and increase the flow of energy or Qi. But why this particular point on the leg? The clue is its name Zusanli known as “the point of longevity” and also “the point of one hundred diseases” due to its immune boosting potential.
The wise General reasoned that his men travelling into foreign places across inhospitable swamps and living in cramped often unsanitary conditions, would need protection in order to be as fit as they could be when engaging with the enemy. Call it an insurance policy if you will to mitigate falling ill, or if they did, they would recover more quickly than those without the mark of protection.
Fast forward to today and we find China in the spotlight as the source of a deadly outbreak of Coronavirus now labelled a pandemic affecting lives, economies and behaviour across the globe.
Is the long-term answer from our equivalent of the wise General, our influential scientists, politicians and powerful advocates to push for a mandatory vaccine program? Something where a mark on your leg is substituted for a readable record that states you have been “protected”. Remember, we are all as unique as our fingerprint, so for me a one size chemical intervention cannot fit all. Especially when it’s administered en masse with the attendant potential safety issues associated from such actions, where the only clear victors are the pharmaceutical companies. Not all vaccines are bad in my opinion, (take the rabies vaccine for example), however, mandatory administration of a vaccine is a big no.
A simple inescapable fact is that the further humanity moves away from nature to create things in a laboratory there will always be consequences unintended or otherwise.
We now have this virus amongst us which has galvanised action across continents to reduce the spread and to create both faster testing of the virus and fast track programs to create a “safe and effective” vaccine. No different to our wise General you might think in seeking to protect his men.
Actually it’s a world of difference, the ancient Chinese did not introduce a cocktail of chemical substances into their bodies as a vaccine does, rather through stimulation of acupuncture points they sought to strengthen the immune system to support the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
After all, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) takes a holistic personal approach to the individual which includes the environment, nutrition and emotional state. A wise General today may well advise the WHO to concentrate on initiatives to curb infectious diseases such as clean water, hygiene, nutrition, education, and economic development and pay attention to supporting a person’s immune system.
Surely this is the way to win this battle we now face. Isn’t this the preferable point of longevity for humankind?
P.S. I am not plugging Acupuncture. I’m just against mandatory vaccinations…
