The Allegory of the cave for the 21^st Century

Around 375 B.C., Plato wrote a series of books called The Republic. Book VII focuses on Plato’s philosophy on how people obtain knowledge about the better things in life; beauty, justice and what is good. But what if your observations are limited by your perception of reality and those who control it?

I wonder what Plato would think of our ability to share ideas and knowledge at the speed of light via the world wide web.  It would be wonderful if always open and honest. But, our world views have been controlled and contrived, with well scripted propaganda played out as “news”. This has been to direct the public on how to think, feel and act. You’ve seen movies with public speakers and town criers yelling “hear ye, hear ye”.  Then came telegraph, printed newspaper and radio. Radio began broadcasting in the early 1920’s, using their voices to inform and influence public opinion. Shortly after came television and a whole new way to influence people, including subliminal programing, still carried out today.

Throughout WWII the entertainment industry was often controlled by the government to show the war in a positive light and keep civilian spirits high. Joseph Goebbels, German propaganda minister, called the radio the “eighth great power”, noting the influence of radio in promoting the Third Reich.

Propaganda was also used In World War II to demoralize American GIs in the Pacific and European theatres. Anonymous voices on the radio were mixed with selected American music to push the virtues of Japanese and Nazi causes.  Servicemen were encouraged to stop fighting while false claims of American defeats along with Japanese or Nazi victories were aired.  In some instance, family members back home were mentioned as well as specific platoons. GIs dubbed the voice from Japan “Tokyo Rose” and the two from Germany were called “Axis Sally” and “Lord Haw-Haw”.

I found it surprising that government also censored or controlled most of the media & entertainment around the world, much like we have been experiencing since 2017.  For us today, our perception is also heavily limited or influenced by the entertainment industry through movies, music, award shows, and social media.  The information being provided is from a small number of people who decide what we should believe.  Much like the Allegory of Plato’s Cave, we have been forced to see only a shadowy perception of the real world.

For some time, I have been feeling like I am watching the scene from The Wizard of Oz where Toto pulls back the curtain exposing “the man behind the curtain”.  In our case not one Wizard but various individuals and organizations who feel themselves smarter than the rest of us. They have been willing to cheat, steel, lie and even murder to maintain their wealth & power over us and they have done this by interfering with our God given rights so clearly defined in the Constitution. And, most recently, by interfering of important information around Covid-19, Gain of Function studies and US elections. I thought 2020 was the height and and culmination of the worst behavior we have been witnessing from leaders and their minions around the world. I was so wrong! Between the controlled narratives in media and mass censorship, many people have grown accustomed to their dark cave, and they were believing the limited world view. This is all they have ever known and what is beyond the shadows may at first be too uncomfortable to bare. But that’s changing as more people wake up to the harsh reality.

Plato suggests that those who have found a way to escape their tethers and climb up into the light should not stay there. They must descend back into the darkness to rescue those chained to the wall by sharing knowledge with them, so they too may move into the light and freedom. True enlightenment is to understand and apply goodness and justice for all. However, I acknowledge that some will be more comfortable in their bondage as that is all they have known. You can share knowledge, but individuals have the choice to see and accept or reject the truth.  At some point, you may have to walk away to continue your own journey, but you should at least try to enlighten others.

It is my hope that humanity has finally earned the right to walk into the light and that we will be able to handle any truth no matter how disturbing or strange.  It is time for us to take personal responsibility for our life choices based on sound principals: Do no harm, follow the laws of God, and strive to be in service to all, including this planet we live on.  It is time for those who have only directed from behind the curtain and in the shadows to diminish and allow this world to be governed by, and for the people, using what knowledge is available.  We are intelligent, independent, and sovereign.  We can also be tenacious when it comes to solving problems. We need stand together and claim our God given rights and call out injustice for what it is.  Most of us may not belong to the “big club” that comedian George Carlin had talked about,  but I for one am happy to belong to a better club of people creating a better world for all.  I would rather fight for the light than die in the shadows of ignorance.

So how can we know or improve our perception of reality?  Oddly enough, it’s going into your own personal cave via meditation.  This trains your brain to become more aware and receptive, and you’ll notice your intuition will become stronger.  You’ll experience synchronicities and learn to trust those gut instincts that are signaling you when information doesn’t feel right.

The Russian’s have a saying: Doveryai, no proveryai – and literally means that a responsible person always verifies everything before committing himself to a common business with anyone, even if that anyone is totally trustworthy.  Reagan would say, Trust but verify.

You can research articles, social media posts, headlines, and mainstream media to decide for yourself if what you are receiving is truth, or only a partial perspective. Shake off those shackles and seek truth, and share it when you can.
