Can You Become Too Attached to the World?
Rev. Kat Carroll
About a 6 1/2 min read
I’m just a humble observer. I recognize patterns and see connections that others may not. And lately, I’m seeing a lot of synchronicities.
On Friday, March 27, a friend sent me a cartoon clip with Peter from Family Guy talking about reincarnation, how we are tempted by attachments to worldly pleasures. He mentioned how becoming too attached to this world is what leads to repeated incarnations, because we become addicted to earthly pleasures or wanting to resolve unfinished business – He also mentioned the white light and it being a trap. Buddhist concepts I had had recently written about are mentioned as a way out of the trap – Detachment. Watch this 2 1/2 min video here. https://www.facebook.com/reel/26553109367614914
What this friend did not know, is that I had been binge watching a show called Altered Carbon, starting that very day. Here is where it gets even more synchronistic.
Wikipedia summarizes the premise of the show as this:
The series starts 360 years in the future, with most episodes of the first season set in the year 2384 in a futuristic metropolis known as Bay City. In the future, a person’s memories and consciousness (termed digital human freight, or DHF) are recorded onto a disk-shaped device called a cortical stack, which is implanted in the vertebrae at the back of the neck.
These storage devices are of alien design and have been reverse-engineered and mass-produced but can only be made from the material on Harlan’s World (hat tip to writer Harlan Ellison). Physical human or synthetic bodies are called “sleeves” and stacks can be transferred to new bodies after death, but a person can still be killed if their stack is destroyed and there is no backup.
Only the wealthiest, known as “Meths” in reference to Methuselah, have the means to change bodies through clones and remote storage of their consciousness in satellites, so they never have to die of old age before being resleeved.
This series appears to take place in and around San Francisco, as the Golden Gate bridge is no longer for driving, but set up as a shanty town across it’s span. And most of what is for sale is deviant sexual pleasure.
The Meths of Altered Carbon echo movies such as Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, the premise centers on a Manhattan doctor, played by Tom Cruise, who embarks on a surreal, night-long odyssey after his wife, played by Nicole Kidman, after she confesses a sexual fantasy about a naval officer. Disturbed by this revelation, the doctor becomes obsessed with experiencing a similar encounter, leading him to infiltrate a masked orgy of a secret society in New York City.
The film explores themes of sexual jealousy, marital secrets, and the duality of human nature, contrasting the couple’s public facade with their hidden desires.
Altered Carbon explores the same, but it takes it much further. When someone can live virtually forever, the normal appetites are no longer enough, and behavior become more extravagant, more macabre, in their search for stimulation and pleasure. But there is little to no care for the people who service these immortal elites. Many are tortured and killed for pleasure, only to be uploaded into a new body to continue as a slave to the system.
At the time all this is happening in the movie, there is a section of humanity that wants to remain mortal, to live and die naturally, rather than experience being “resleeved’ in a new body after each death. They feel Real death (the permanent destruction of their stack) due to religious or philosophical objections is a sin, and that each time they resleeved (or reincarnate) into a new body, it’s only a copy.
From this perspective, the original consciousness ceases to exist when the body dies, meaning that the version restored from a backup is a distinct entity, not the original “you.” Some people in this story believe that death gives life meaning and that the pursuit of immortality through resleeving devalues human existence. Death gives live meaning.
This made me wonder if constant reincarnation can destabilize the soul, especially when memory of the last life is wiped clean during the experience. Does this make us slaves to our desires? Is the concept of resleeving a way to speak of reincarnation as a negative concept?
Which brings us back to the Family Guy video uploaded by Daily Conspiracy PeterX on Facebook and Twitter/X. If you have not yet watched that short video, I recommend you do as he talks about avoiding the white light at death. Some consider reincarnation a soul trap. The Egyptians have even mentioned this.
But here is where it gets interesting, at least from my perspective. Before Jesus died on the cross, he made statements about being in the world but not of it. Jesus declared He was “not of this world” to distinguish His origin and mission from the system of human values often opposed to God. While physically present on earth, His allegiance and nature remained distinct, as stated in John 8:23: “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.”
With the help of some reference material, I learned that the Greek word translated as “world” is cosmos—not simply the Earth itself, but the order, the system, the structure of things. In that light, His words take on a deeper meaning. Perhaps He was not speaking about a different location, but a different alignment—one rooted in the patterns of this world, and one connected to something beyond them.
God (by whatever name you choose) is the universal consciousness that created all things. Throughout scripture and tradition, Earth is described as being under the influence of another—a fallen angel. But also according to scripture, that time will come to an end, and it may already be taking place as we see certain agencies failing under the weight of their own corruption and greed. This is reflected in the book of Revelation.

What’s also interesting is the mention of the end of Satan’s reign after being unleashed for a thousand years. The final attempt to rule Earth ends when fire comes down from heaven to devour the attacking armies, leading to Satan being cast into the lake of fire and brimstone—marking the definitive end of his power and the old world order (Revelation 20:10), and the Qumran War Scroll which describes The War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness.
And what have we been witnessing in March? Meteorite activity and fireballs reported across the United States. Is it simply a natural cycle… or something more?
METEOR MELTDOWN OVER THE USA ☄️ What’s Really Happening?!
What is Satan known for? Temptations: After the 40 days and nights of fasting and praying in the desert, the Devil appeared to Jesus with these temptations:
- Physical Needs (Lust of the Flesh):Satan tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread to satisfy His hunger after fasting, urging Him to rely on His own power rather than God’s provision.
- Pride and Spectacle (Pride of Life):Satan challenged Jesus to throw Himself from the temple pinnacle, twisting Scripture to suggest God would send angels to save Him, effectively tempting Jesus to test God’s love and seek a public miracle.
- Worldly Power (Lust of the Eyes):Satan offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their glory if Jesus would bow down and worship him-presenting a shortcut to authority that bypassed the suffering of the cross.
Jesus firmly rejected this offer by quoting Deuteronomy, commanding Satan to depart and declaring, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”
Ancient texts like those found at Qumran wrestled with similar questions—of identity, authority, and what it means to be called “of God.” Even then, the line between truth and imitation was not always clear. A dear friend sent me this—in perfect timing with what I’m writing about today: 4Q246, a fragment written about 100 years before the birth of Jesus, yet appears to be foretelling his arrival.
So, while scripture may be difficult to read, and sometimes to comprehend, we tell these stories in movies, books and as allegory. Perhaps so more people would recognize that we are spiritual beings having a physical experience, and… we are being tempted.
In the 21st century, that temptation includes transhumanism, as well as all the temptations of the flesh, media and experiences that glorify excess, distortion, or disconnection.
These temptations may seem pleasant at the time, but if misused, they cut off your connection to the higher, spiritual realms. When I included sex in that list of temptations, I was not referring to normal relationships, but those such as rape and violent behavior. That’s not love…. That’s something different.
So, Friday, (and not even Good Friday), was a strange day for being reminded of what the sacrifice of Jesus was about, and how we are all spiritual beings being tempted while in a physical body.
And if there is a lesson to be learned, it’s that it’s never too late to change course, to repent, and to live simply. Detach from worldly things.
In my last article which briefly covered Taoism, Christianity, and Hermetics, we learned that life could be much easier, and without suffering if we only remember, we are children of the universe, embodying its totality. Thus, every cosmic principle finds resonance within us, affirming our role as co-creators.
And simpler still, if God is love, and we were made in God’s image…. What loving images and new systems do you want to create while in the world?
