Digital ID has long been pushed and presented as an inevitable and convenient upgrade: secure, efficient and modern. Promising to cut fraud, reduce illegal working, stop boats in their tracks and prepare citizens for an increasingly online economy. ID framed as consumer-facing, convenient – a single log in for government services. Later to be built upon to integrate numerous other surveillance and permission based entitlements. Yet, the opposition to such schemes as those presented in the UK is substantial, with online petitions exploding in numbers in short order.
