We Make The Way By Walking
The Journey of 2,300 Miles for Peace
Rev. Kat Carroll
The Journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step – The Tao
I’ve been watching the journey of 19 Buddhist Monks as they trek across the nation to Washington DC. Not a short stroll but a long walk of about 2,300 miles!
Many of the 19 on this journey for peace are barefoot. And they adopted a stray dog, named Aloka, (a name interpreted as “bringing light” or “enlightenment”) who has been happily striding beside them.
But why 19?
The spiritual meaning of the number 19 is deeply tied to transformation, completion, and the initiation of new cycles. It symbolizes the end of a significant phase, whether emotional, professional, or spiritual, making way for fresh beginnings aligned with a deeper spiritual mission.
If 2025 added up to 9, the end of a cycle, 1 is the beginning of something new in 2026. And 19 shows the movement from one to the other. How divine is that!
What I love about this story is how they touch so many, without needing to lay a hand on anyone. Their peaceful presence and walking in a meditative state is sufficient to send out a wave of energy, a quantum field of possibility. And their intention is for peace.
Walking in gratitude is pure creative potential. Envisioning what they want to see in the world is something I’ve expressed in previous articles and in talks with our groups at Prepare for Change. They are setting up a resonant field of energy. It acts much like a guitar string that, once plucked, causes the other strings to vibrate along with it. And what a wonderful note this group has chosen… One of peace, and they are showing us the way.
The Tao, often translated as “the Way,” is a central concept in Chinese philosophy and religion, particularly in Taoism. It refers to the fundamental, ineffable principle that underlies and unifies all existence, representing the natural order of the universe and the way things truly are. The Tao is described as formless, nameless, and beyond definition, yet it is the source and essence of all things, both seen and unseen.
It’s expressed across multiple religious and belief systems, especially Taoism, where it is comparable to some notions of Logos, the Monad, or God in western philosophies, some notions of Dharma or Brahman in Indian philosophies, and some notions of the Great Spirit (or “Great Mystery”) in Native American traditions. The word itself translates as “way”, “path”, or “route”, or sometimes more loosely as “doctrine” or “principle” and is often used to signify the fundamental or true nature of Reality.
If you watched Disney’s Sci Fi series, the Mandalorian, you’ll recall the expression, “This is the way”.
In this case, these Buddhist Monks walk the path to peace and embrace the way of the peaceful warrior.
In Buddhism, the term for a peaceful warrior is “Sems dpa,” which translates from Tibetan as “Spiritual Warrior” and is synonymous with the Bodhisattvas—both enlightened beings and Mahayana practitioners who generate bodhicitta (“aspiration to enlightenment” or “the thought of awakening”). This concept does not imply violence; rather, it refers to one who is brave and courageous in facing inner obstacles such as ignorance, fear, and delusion, using wisdom and compassion as their primary “weapons”.
Whether you are amused or feel the positive energy of these monks, and whether you are embracing your own bodhicitta, just remember, the journey starts with a single step. The trick to reaching your destination is through embracing the journey, and all you learn along the way.
The journey will have its ups and downs and crazy spirals. But I hope you’ll embrace it with joy, a smile, and laughter from your heart.
Make it a fun ride for yourself and others you meet on your path to enlightenment.
