CBD Dog Treats vs. Hemp Oil: All You Need to Know

CBD is now famously considered a drug that can be used for almost all kinds of problems that affect the human body. However, CBD doesn’t simply affect human beings alone. CBD for dogs is used to the same effect.

However, most people don’t realize it, but CBD for dogs isn’t the same thing as hemp oil. CBD is a relatively new player in the market and has only recently started penetrating thanks to recent changes with the 2018 Farm Bill law. Hemp, on the other hand, has been around for decades. So, what’s the difference, and will they affect your dog in different ways, too?

The difference between CBD and hemp oil

The main difference between the two compounds lies in the fact that they are not extracted from the same part of the marijuana (or hemp) plant. The production of CBD oil is done from the leaves, flowers and stalks of the hemp plant, while hemp oil comes from the seeds.

The stalks and leaves usually have a higher concentration of CBD, which means CBD is potentially more beneficial, but the seeds simply contain more nutrients and bioactive compounds.

Why does this distinction matter?

Dog owners concerned about the difference between CBD and hemp oil are coming from the right place. A significant percentage of THC won’t affect your dog the same way it affects you. Dogs tend to be a lot more sensitive to it, so rather than feel relaxed or relieved from pain, they may be paranoid the whole time.

Besides, CBD and hemp oil are so different from each other that their benefits do not overlap. 

CBD dog treats

All the hype around CBD revolves around its anti-inflammatory properties. This enables it to be beneficial in a wide range of cases – from inflammation to pain relief. It can successfully be added to dogs treats or food to provide relief from joint pain and post-surgery to help calm your pet. The latter benefit is derived from its anti-anxiety effects, and also applies for normal cases of anxiety.

Some dogs experience anxiety due to past abandonment issues, while others are naturally predisposed to being afraid of loud noises or in groups of people. To calm them in situations where such triggers cannot be avoided, CBD is a go-to remedy.

Other benefits of CBD oil include being beneficial for improving your pet’s sleep cycle, which, again, may be disrupted after an injury or other trauma; improving digestion and appetite in sick dogs; and for managing other kinds of pain.

Hemp oil dog treats

Seeds produce oils to have a constant source they can burn for energy production and other chemicals such as fatty acids for constant nutrition. In the cannabis plant, this abundance of oil in the seeds is important for us since it serves as the source of all the hemp oil we use. As such, it’s nothing more than seed oil – it contains some antioxidants and fatty acids but trace amounts of CBD and THC.

Generally, THC is viewed as a superfood – a great addition to your dog’s diet, rather than a remedy for pain or helping with anxiety. Additionally, regarding the legality, vets are allowed to recommend hemp oil in all states across the US, if they believe you need it, but not necessarily CBD. 

It has a high content of omega-3, omega-6, and gamma-linoleic acid. The latter is especially important because dogs and cats cannot produce linoleic acid on their own – they have to receive it from a dietary source.

Fatty acid deficiency is pretty uncommon in modern times due to the widespread availability of balanced pet food that fits all the necessary nutritional profiles. Your dog’s intake of the fatty acids is going to be greatly reduced if they don’t have a proper diet or is unable to absorb the nutrients due to a disease or other genetic factors.

Is mixing them up dangerous?

Using CBD instead of hemp oil (or vice versa) isn’t particularly dangerous and won’t have any lasting effects. However, it’s plain as day to see you won’t be able to get pain relief from hemp oil, if you confuse it with CBD. 

Sadly, you don’t have your work cut out for you, either, because a lot of marketing companies are trying to make the boundary between the two as narrow as possible. It’s pretty common to find hemp seeds oil being referred to as ‘cannabis sativa oil,’ for example, which is deceptive.

Make sure you don’t fall for any of these clever marketing traps by checking the product label. It should clearly state that it contains a decent percentage of CBD. If it doesn’t state anything about nutritional content, you’re probably being had. Avoid generic brands like this that seem to have something to hide.
