What Is Vitamin D?

By Dr. Hinz at Cool Springs Chiropractic,

First and foremost, it’s important to understand hat vitamin D is. Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids. These secosteroids are responsible for increasing the intestinal absorption of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate.

Vitamin D can be found in certain foods, the sun and vitamin capsules. A proper amount of vitamin D will help you build strong bones. It does so by absorbing calcium which is one of bone’s main building blocks. Here are five reasons why vitamin D is super important for your overall well-being.

1. Vitamin D Deficiency Can Be Incredibly Harmful

If you don’t receive enough sunlight, suffer from milk allergies or adhere to a vegan diet, you may be at risk for vitamin D deficiency. Some of the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency is bone pain and muscle weakness. However, symptoms can be very little subtle.

Perhaps the most dangerous part of vitamin D deficiency is the long terms risks associated with deficiency. Some longterm risks include an increased risk of breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer and heart disease. It can also lead to depression, weight gain and other maladies.

2. It Can Help Prevent Diseases

While doctors and scientists are still unsure as to how vitamin D can help prevent certain diseases. With that being said, a proper amount of vitamin D has been linked to disease prevention. Those with higher levels of vitamin D have a lower risk of disease.

A proper amount of vitamin D can also go a long way in preventing the diseases mentioned earlier. Vitamin D deficiency can be harmful and can lead to a heightened risk of cancers and diseases.

3. Treats Certain Ailments

The Vitamin D Council suggests that vitamin D can be used as a treatment. Vitamin D treatment can be helpful in treating chronic pain, depression, diabetes, and heart disease. Is can also be used to prevent autism, autoimmune disease, and cancer.

Studies and research point to Vitamin D preventing and treating these diseases. However, there have been no clinical trials that can definitively prove that Vitamin D can be used as a treatment.

4. Helps Build Strong Bones

Your body needs calcium to promote bone growth. Vitamin D can absorb calcium which can help bones grow fast and healthy. Too little vitamin D results in soft bones in children and fragile, misshapen bones in adults.

In fact, vitamin D is so important that your body actually makes vitamin D by itself. However, it only makes it after the skin is exposed to sufficient sunlight. Your body needs an ample amount of vitamin D so it can promote bone growth.

5. Regulates the Immune System and More

Promoting strong bones and bone growth isn’t the only benefit of vitamin D. Vitamin Dd can help regulate the immune system and the neuromuscular system. But still, vitamin D does so much more than that.

Vitamin D also plays a big factor in most human cells. This is why it’s believed that vitamin D can help treat and prevent certain diseases. It’s also why an insufficient amount of vitamin can lead to diseases and longterm negative health effects.

Why Is It Hard to Get Vitamin D?

For some people, receiving enough vitamin D can be a struggle. This is because vitamin D mostly comes from an ample amount of sunlight. This can obviously be a struggle for people who aren’t outside often.

It’s also more difficult for people who live in certain climates where it’s rainy or cloudy often. People in colder northern climates only receive enough sunlight during small portions of the year while people in the south receive enough year around. People with darker skin also have a difficult time receiving enough vitamin D because the body doesn’t absorb sunlight at the same rate as lighter skin.
